Deemed Certification Resource
Starting January 1, 2026, social workers already registered in good standing in another Canadian jurisdiction who meet specific requirements and provide the required documentation to the College will receive notice from the College that they are deemed certified. This certification allows them to work in Ontario for a one-time six-month period. For more information, review this resource.
Eligibility for the Social Work Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA) General Application
- You must be registered in good standing with another social work Canadian regulatory or licensing body (outside of Ontario).
and
- You want to provide social work services to clients living in Ontario.
Before Starting the Application Process
- Review the Registration Requirements webpage to ensure that you meet all the registration requirements.
- For applicants who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents, ensure you have a valid copy of your work/study permit.
Application Process
Apply Online through the College’s Online Portal
- If you are applying for registration with the College for the first time, create an online account. You will need an active email address to create the account. We recommend using a personal (non-work) email address as all future College correspondence will be sent to this email address.
- If you are a previous applicant or current registrant applying for the other certificate of registration, access the Online Portal with the preferred email address on file at the College.
- Visit the Online Portal webpage for more information on how to create or access your account.
Complete the Online Application
- Click on the “Apply” tab at the top of the screen and select “Register as a Social Worker”.
- Select the “Social Work Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA) General” application.
- After you submit your application and pay the application fee, you will receive an email acknowledging receipt of the application.
Required Documents
The “Documents” section of the online application has all the documents you need to complete.
Required document(s) the applicant must provide
- Copy of your Change of Name Certificate, Marriage Certificate or other evidence of legal name change (only required if the name you are applying under is different than the name on your supporting documents).
- Copy of your vulnerable sector check completed within six months before the date of application. For more information, visit the Vulnerable Sector Check webpage.
Required document(s) from third parties
All applicants must have the In Good Standing Certificate Form sent directly to the College from the other regulatory body they are registered with.
Applicants must first complete section A of the In Good Standing Certificate, then forward the form to the social work regulator where they are currently registered and ask them to complete the rest of the form. Once completed, the Canadian social work regulator must email it directly to registration@ocswssw.org.
Social workers registered with Alberta College of Social Workers or Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers only:
- An official transcript, which must be sent directly from the academic institution, confirming the degree that was awarded and the date it was awarded.
- The academic institution can send the transcript by mail, email or through third party platforms (such as MyCreds™ or Parchment). More information on how transcripts must be sent to the College can be found on the Transcript Requirements webpage
OR
- For those educated outside Canada or the USA and who are currently registered with Alberta College of Social Workers or Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers, contact the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) and request that they forward a copy of your evaluation report directly to the College to registration@ocswssw.org. An official transcript for your international social work credentials is not required.
Note: Social workers registered in Canadian provinces or territories other than Alberta or Saskatchewan are not required to provide official transcripts.
Required documents applicants who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents must provide
- Copy of a valid work or study permit.

The College’s Review
The College will review applications once they have been submitted and the $100 application fee has been paid.
If your application is incomplete or is missing any necessary information or documents, you will be contacted by email.
An application is considered complete when:
- All sections of the application have been filled in.
- The $100 application fee has been received.
- All required supporting documents have been received and approved.
Processing Times
Once all the required documentation for your application is received and fees have been paid, it takes up to 30 (thirty) business days to process your application.
