As annual renewal season approaches, many registrants have questions about the renewal process and what is required to maintain their registration. Below are answers to some frequently asked questions to help guide you through the renewal period.
When should I renew my registration?
We recommend that you plan ahead and renew as early as possible during the renewal season, which opens in early November. As the December 31 renewal deadline approaches, increased inquiry volumes and holiday office closures may delay assistance. Renewing early gives you time to resolve any questions or technical issues before the deadline.
Do I need to renew if I am not currently practising?
Yes. All registrants in good standing must renew their certificate of registration every year, on or before December 31. This includes registrants in the general, inactive and retired classes.
Why do I pay an annual registration fee?
Social work and social service work are regulated professions in Ontario. Registrants pay an annual fee to the College to remain registered and to support the College’s work as the provincial regulator. Registration fees enable the College to fulfill its mandate to protect the public by regulating the practice of both professions. All costs associated with regulating the professions must be covered entirely through registrant fees. The College receives no additional or government funding.
What do registration fees support?
Fees support the College’s regulatory responsibilities, including:
- Registering qualified social workers and social service workers;
- Establishing and maintaining standards of practice;
- Maintaining the public Online Register;
- Administering the Continuing Competence Program;
- Providing professional practice resources and consultations; and
- Addressing complaints, reports and discipline matters.
What are the registration fees for 2027?
There will be no increase to registration and renewal fees for 2027. The annual fees are:
- General class: $400
- Electronic practice: $100
- Inactive class: $200
- Retired class: $50
What if I plan on retiring in 2027?
If you intend to move to the retired class for 2027, submit your status-change request through the Online Portal before December 31. If the College is not notified by the deadline, you may be required to renew and pay the fee for your current class of registration.
