New Registration Requirement Coming Soon: What Employers Need to Know

The College is introducing a new registration requirement. As of October 1, 2025, all new applicants will be required to submit a vulnerable sector check as part of the registration process.

This additional registration requirement serves as an additional tool to help safeguard the public from potential harm and brings the College in line with other regulatory bodies. Most Canadian social work regulators already require background checks as part of their registration process.

The requirement to submit a vulnerable sector check will only apply to new applicants. Current registrants will not have to submit one to maintain their registration.

Below are answers to some common questions to help employers understand what this upcoming new registration requirement involves and how it may affect new employees.

Will a finding on a vulnerable sector check disqualify an applicant from registering?

No. Applicants will not be automatically disqualified from being approved to register with the College if the vulnerable sector check brings up a finding. Each instance will be considered on a case-by-case basis, using an equity lens. We are committed to implementing this registration requirement in such a way that it does not perpetuate the historical and ongoing harm caused to Black, Indigenous and racialized individuals as a result of discriminatory legal processes.

Can students use vulnerable sector checks obtained for a practicum placement?

Yes. The College will consider vulnerable sector checks valid for a six-month period If an applicant recently completed a vulnerable sector check for a practicum placement at your organization, they can use the same vulnerable sector check in their College application, as long as their full application is submitted within six months of the vulnerable sector check being completed.

Will this registration requirement impact my hiring processes?
The vulnerable sector check that will be required from all College applicants is not meant to replace any hiring processes that an employer may already have in place. As an employer, it is your responsibility to exercise due diligence when hiring a social worker or social service worker.

Employers are encouraged to continue with their own safeguarding processes when hiring social workers and social service workers.
